Living with GPP isn’t easy, but there are some things you can try to help manage life with GPP. From finding a doctor who knows GPP to tracking symptoms and seeking treatment, taking an active role might help you feel more in control of your condition.

You can help others by explaining that GPP is a rare disease, so it makes sense that most people have never heard of it. Being open about what you’re going through can help your friends and family understand—and it may help you feel better to share your experience.

3 GPP Flares are not predictable

FLARES ARE UNPREDICTABLE

You may have to tell a coworker that you have to stay home when you have symptoms, even if the parts of your skin that are uncovered look OK. You may have to tell friends that you need to cancel plans without notice when flares come on suddenly. And it may help to share how you feel about physical intimacy with your partner.

There are many things you can do to support someone living with GPP. Reaching out often to ask how you can help is a good place to start.

  • CHECK IN WITH THEM TO HELP WITH FEELINGS OF ISOLATION
  • REASSURE THEM THAT IT’S OK IF THEY NEED TO CANCEL OR RESCHEDULE PLANS AT THE LAST MINUTE
  • ENCOURAGE THEM TO SEEK TREATMENT AT THE FIRST SIGN OF A FLARE
  • OFFER TO PICK UP MEDICINE, GIVE THEM A RIDE TO THE DOCTOR, OR OTHER THINGS THEY MIGHT NEED
  • MOST IMPORTANT OF ALL, LET THEM KNOW THAT YOU ARE THERE FOR THEM AND THEY ARE NOT ALONE
